But because there are a lot of big pieces to blend in, the impressionistic, stream-of-consciousness result leaves gaps that beg to be filled. When the mix of styles and storylines works, including scenes from the poem translated into stunning free-form animation, it is as free and fresh as the original piece. Danny Trejo plays an ex-federale who seeks vengeance on the businessman and politician who double-crossed him. MACHETE (Fox) Feature-length version of fake movie trailer in "Grindhouse," director Robert Rodriguez's collaboration with Quentin Tarantino. Story of an online relationship that may not be what it seems is, in revelation after heart-wrenching revelation, breathtaking. (PG-13 crude sexual content, partial nudity, language) ** 1/2ĬATFISH (Universal) Resonant, haunting, provocative, is-it-real-or-is-it-staged documentary about who we are, whom we wish we were and the spawning ground that social media has become for both. But director Jay Roach wrangles nicely constructed character sketches from an unruly improvisational ensemble that includes Zach Galifianakis and Jemaine Clement. Carell does not stray far from the clueless character he plays on "The Office," and the film is formula-driven. Paul Rudd is a low-level drone who brings Steve Carell, whose avocation is making "mousterpieces," meticulously constructed dioramas using dead rodents. DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS (Fox) In this remake of a French film, a bunch of corporate snobs compete to bring the biggest loser to dinner.
